SCOPE OF PRACTICE Laparoscopic surgery Providing advanced laparoscopic surgery with state of the art technology such as the harmonic scapel and intraoperative ultrasound. Minimally invasive or laparoscopic surgery has been a revolution for all surgeons. Procedures which in the past required long hospital stays can now be done as day surgery procedures most of the time. Incisions are smaller with laparoscopic sugery. Pain is usually less requiring fewer narcotics. There is also less disruption and manipulation of intraabdominal organs than with open surgery. This leads to a more rapid return of bowel function. Return to work time is also usuallly less with laparoscopic surgery. We offer a wide range of procedures using laparoscopic techniques. During his training Dr. McDearmont worked at the Southwestern Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery. This is a well respected national center for training laparoscopic surgeons. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, appendectomy, colon resection, splenectomy, and diagnostic laparoscopy are all procedures within the scope of our practice. Breast Surgery/Breast Cancer Treatment Dr. McDearmont works with a network of specialists to provide comprehensive care for breast cancer. Aggressive screening and biopsy programs help to detect breast cancer early. The latest technology including sentinel lymph node biopsy and partial breast irradiation are offered. Dr. McDearmont is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, a group committed to improving care for surgical patients with breast disease. Dr. McDearmont supports The American Cancer Society and Susan Komen Foundation for the Cure. Hernia Surgery We are committed to choosing the right hernia operation for the individual patient. To this end all types of mesh repairs are offered. Athletics evaluations to rule out sports hernia are always available. Colon Surgery Again our comprehensive network of specialists ensures the highest quality of care for patients with colon cancer. Colon cancer screening with colonoscopy is available from our gastroenterology colleagues. We offer a full range of colorectal procedures. Surgical treatment of large colon polyps and diverticular disease of the colon is offered by an open or laparoscopic approach. Thyroid surgery The purpose of surgical management of thyroid nodules is to rule out thyroid cancer and control compressive symptoms in the neck. With our radiology and internal medicine colleagues, we advocate an agressive pursuit and work up of thyroid nodules to exclude the possibility of thyroid cancer. Surgical Emergencies Emergency room call is covered 24 hr/day, Seven days a week for surgical emergencies such as appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, perforated intestine, and uncontrollable internal bleeding. Anorectal surgery Anorectal surgery encompasses hemorrhoid problems, anal fissures, and fistulas. These problems are common and require a patient approach that reserves surgery for only patients who fail conservative treatment. In office anoscopy and hemorrhoidal banding are available as well.
